An idea that I'm using that I got here (like most of my ideas): give an Explorer the promotion "Medic" and stash one in an important stack (whether front line or "field hospital"). It's a good use for a relatively low-hammer city that can still produce +6 experience."...your Caravel has killed a Spanish Man-o-War."

Explorer uses:
Pillager escort
If you get compass early, explorers/horse archers are a solid mobile pillaging force.
Barb defense
Fortify one on a forest hill between you and a barb city, and you should be safe until the barbs get rifles. Which they usually don't. At least not before you've taken them out.
Medic
Use your early pillaging explorers and barb defenese explorers as medics once they become too weak for combat (no upgrade path). In the mid game they can move faster than your unit stacks, so you only need a few. In the late game, they move just as fast as armor and mech inf, and you never have to worry about a medic defending the stack and dying. Unless you're badly outmaneuvered and your stack is being slaughtered.

Those who do not do so will be forced, in their next game, to play a power directly between Catherine and Montezuma.
