I'm trying to load a Settler onto a caravel, but I am having problems doing that, how exactly am I supposed to position them?

You can't load settlers onto caravels. You are stuck with galleys until you can research astronomy and get galleons.

Caravels can only carry Scout, Explorer, Missionary, Spy, or Great People

Makes a lot of sense, eh? Everyone knows that the Pilgims came over in Galleons, right? Clever developers not wanting early overseas settling for some unfathomable reason. I guess they have been studying polynesian history.

I'd like a colonist unit that was distinct from a settler. Unable to build anything until it grew through cottage to town and then through the back of that. It would be able to gather resources in the three by three around it and wouldn't have the same upkeep costs as a city either.

It would be a much more sensible way of colonising the artic wastes when all you want is the oil and it would allow you to start putting down claims in the new world before industrial era colonisation was possible.

In fact, before Civ4 came out, i always complained in my mind, that cities are the only centers of population and everyhing arouns them seems to be unpopulated.
My idea to that was, that population should grow on each tile and eventually trigger the founding of a city. Apparently firaxis has chosen a another-way-around approach, but at least the land between cities doesnt seem to be empty anymore. I am glad about that...
