  • Invasions

We all know that in Continents maps the AI will send an invading force at some point. Not that it happens in every game, but it's common. I found a trick to use that in your favor.

All you have to do is have a ship patrolling the waters between your land and theirs. Leaders who do that a lot are Isabella and Alex but others can do it too. When you see their Frigates/Galleons coming... what do you do? Sink them? NO !

Instead you go to some guy who likes you and sign a defensive pact. Or many pacts if you can. Next turn the victim leader declares war. And he is caught in crossfire. In essense you have triggered an AI war without paying any technology.

To make it even better you can choose a victim and do everything possible to piss him/her off. Don't accept their demands, trade with their enemies, ask for tribute etc. Haha, great fun.

Your allies also steal your target cities

Those Japanese stitched me up "good and proper" yesterday. I'd targeted Isabelle as my first renaissance period target. She’s not even a credible leader with all her dogmatic religious prejudices and it is easy to make an enemy of her. Since she managed also to turn Tokugawa and Monty against her I figured that a sudden attack with Grenadiers would quickly capture me Madrid with its two shrines.

    I had underestimated all three….

Firstly, Isabelle obliterated my landing party by throwing everything from Madrid at it. About five macemen, three horse archers, some crossbows and some longbows killed my first invasion force before their siege of Madrid could begin.

Second, Tokugawa declares war on Isabelle and she managed to capture Murcia back from the Japanese before the war machine clicked into gear and walked into Madrid weakened by their losses against my forces.

Having taken one Spanish city I found that Tokugawa was cleaning up on the rest so I decided a change of plan was necessary. Madrid fell quickly to my superior forces and my units were able to settle down and gradually pick off the rogue Japenese units found pillaging.

All was going well until a “small” Aztec was seen in the recaptured Japenese city of Murcia and in striking range of Madrid. Too late to arrange for more reinforcements I had to watch the city gradually battered down by repeated attacks. I would estimate that he threw around 15 units at Madrid in the first wave and another 10 in the second.
