And there is a difference between annoying micro like sending a worker to constantly clean pollution and fun micro like designing units.

Everything in civ is micro management really, it just boils down to what is fun and what isn't.

If something requires some time but is fun to do, then it isn't considered micro because, well, you had fun doing it.

Does sending workers all over the map to clean pollution take alot of time? Not really, but it is very very very unfun, hence considered micro hell.
While there might be a physics engine that applies to the jugs, I doubt that an entire engine was written specifically for the funbags. - Cyclotron - debating the pressing issue of boobies in games.

Micro is good as long as the interface is good.

        SMAC haters

SMAC was a fabulous game, with perhaps the best story in any non RPG game out there. Interesting factions, wonderful personalities, and an intriguing planet. I'd rather they focus on SMAC II as the next full game. I don't think I'd immediately want another Civ. Wait a few years before they think of making a new Civ game.

If we are talking about the example of SMAC the unit workshop was only optional if you think that you could do as well with the default units as you could designing your own. You could be much more successful if you designed your own units to suit the situation (as UR described above) so therefore you were at a disadvantage if you didn't use it.

It's like saying that in Civ 4 micromanaging your workers is optional, well theoretically you can automate them but in reality it is a massive disadvantage not to manage them yourself. So basically I think if the option is there you'd have to micro it.

I think the upgrade system in Civ IV for specialising units is much more intuitive, quicker and more fun. Plus you get to have much, much, much more interesting unit graphics because they don't all have to be composed of components generic enough to fit into a unit workshop formula.

No, using unit workshop really is optional. I would be perfectly fine playing a game with standard units. Against the AI at least, its no prob. And anyway, it takes 5 seconds to make a unit=no micromanagement.
if you want to stop terrorism; stop participating in it

''Oh,Commissar,if we could put the potatoes in one pile, they would reach the foot of God''.But,replied the commissar,''This is the Soviet Union. There is no God''.''Thats all right'' said the worker,''There are no potatoes''
