  • Subs for economic warfare?

I think they left the power of subs a little short in the game. How about the economic warfare side of subs?

If you park a sub within a square or two of an enemy city they should take a hit to there trade routes. Maybe lose one whole route or suffer a point on each - something to make me want to field a wolfpack.

You would get a note each turn alerting you that X city loses y $ due to sub attacks. Then you'd need to field some sub hunters to clear them out.

Maybe give them a stronger first shot? Sub warfare was huge for a time yet they never really get a fair shot here.

There has to be more to it than delivering a spy...

Well, if you are at war with that Civ, you will prevent production in more than just one tile if you have a ship in the sea area of a city radius. I'm pretty sure that's the intention for blockades in Civ4, unfortuanatly.

Even if you are at war with the civ, blockading a port's sea tiles does not hinder their Trade Route income, even with surface ships.

      Disappointing, but true.
Per spy intelligence after port had been blockaded from previous turn.

I like this idea, it would give players reasons to build subs and more destroyers for ASW purposes. Right now, subs are sort of a red-headed stepchild and I rarely build any.

If you run Mercantilism you aren't getting any foreign trade routes anyway. Besides you need wolf packs for this to work, and they didn't operate anywhere near ports.
