After reading the tread on forts
I came to this suggestion
1/ It would be fun that you could build defensive structures outside the city, this is to say, no more wall etc. inside the city.
2/ It will have to come with a heavy price, otherwise it will become impossible to attack.
3/ You have to make a cost that is increasing with the amount of defense, just like with mobile units. (so these is a kind of stationary units, ref. price)
If fortification end up I neutral land, they have no effect and they cost nothing (they belong to nobody)
But if units are moved inside fortification in neutral land, they get a “this tile only” ownership, and cost.
If a friendly open border nation enter, they still belong to the “first” nation
All prices of city defense will be added together then rounded down.
All prices/buildtimes if played at standart settings
I came up with this.
Engineers
Most city defense can only be build/pillages by Engineers. (except when stated)
Pre-request: Engineering
Wooden Wall, You can build WW only in tiles that borders to your own City center.
Build by Worker 2 turn
Enemy gets –50% against archers in city (both defense and attack)
Price:
first 80: 0,05 gold/turn round-down – hereafter 0,1 gold/turn round- down
Takes 3 turns to pillage for one engineer, 12 turns for military units
With the discovery of City defense: A dead-end Tech, that comes after Archery
Pre-request:
Agriculture – With the stable city of the early farming, came the need for defense
Bronze working – To cut the wood
Conclusion: You can use Your Archers to Attack from the city while under siege.
But it comes with a price as you need 8 pcs. Just to surround one city with wall’s, and they will only
Protect 1 tile from city, making the “outer” tiles woundable to pillage.
Can be upgraded to Stonewall
Absolete with Gunpowder (if not upgraded they simply disappear from the map)
Wooden Tower , can be build on any hill tile - that belong to you
Build by Worker 10 turn inside your border
Defensive bonus fore units in tower 15% (add’s to the defense of the tile), has a 5 tiles line of sight
Price: 1 gold / turn (For every 2 towns one free tower)
Takes 1 turns to pillage for one engineer, 4 turns for military units
With the discovery of Defense Tower: A dead-end Tech, that comes with Monarchy
Pre-request: Bronze Working
Conclusion: the early scout tower or the early fortification of an important hill tile
Absolete with Rifling, disappears from the map
Stone Wall, You can build SW only in tiles that borders to your own City center.
Build by Engineer 4 turn ( 2 turn if on wooden wall )
Enemy gets –25% bombardment –10% against gunpowder units (both defense & attack)
Price:
first 80: 0,1 gold/turn, hereafter 0,2 gold/turn
Takes 5 turns to pillage for one engineer
With the discovery of Feudalism: Pre-request:
Conclusion: You can use Your Gunpowder units to Attack from the city while under siege.
And slowing down bombardment.
But it comes with a price as you need 8 pcs. Just to surround one city with wall’s, and they will only
Protect 1 tile from city, making the “outer” tiles woundable to pillage.
Absolete with Flight (they simply disappear from the map)
Castle , can be build on any Hill or Coast tile or by a River - that belong to you
Engineer 8 turn inside your border.
Defensive bonus units in tower 50% (add’s to the defense of the tile), has a 12 tiles line of sight
Every ranged unit inside, Has a 2% chance of making a free hit on a unit, inside a 20 tile radius (same as city radius) this also at sea units.
Price: First 1 gold/turn next 1,2 next 1,4 and so on
-25% cost with a national Wonder ?
Takes 10 turns to pillage for one engineer.
With the discovery of Nationalism
Pre-request: Defense tower
Conclusion: Castle will be the defence that keep the enemy out of a Zone you want to keep.
And what you put on top of your most important resources, but if you build to many it will
Kill your bankroll.
Absolete with armor, disappears from the map
I think you get the picture
Other defense structures:
Modern fortifikation: modern version off stone walls; 10% chance of hitting aircraft & enemy gets –50% against machinegun
Minefields/Camuflaged Ambush:
Can be build anyvhere if a tile is empty or contains only road/railroad, even in enemy land
Engineers has a 25% chance of detecting when entering the tile
Personel Minefield: 2% chance of making a deadly hit at a unit (except modern armor) entering the tile.
You can only enter the tile with a engieneer (to clean off the tile)
Anti Armor minefield: 1% chance of making a deadly hit at a tank or modern armor entering the tile
Camuflaged Ambush: makes a max of 4 units invisible in a tile, until an enemy enter the tile, must be in jungle/forrest
