  • Why? Why do the fates tempt me?!

From the "What Happens When You Don't Pay Attention To Something In Civ IV" files..

I have a situation where I need a Great Artist for a Culture Bomb. I've placed a city down in an area with a good deal of resources, but I'm close to other Civs and I want to be able to use the Bomb to expand that city's territory crazy-style, before they found an Annoying Base Right Next To Mine (tm).

So, I check on it one turn, and I'm 2 turns away from the GA in the city I assigned some specialists.

Whats this? A great scientist has been born in... wait, thats one of my towns. And not the one I'm hoping for the Artist in.

So, sure enough, I now have quite a few more turns before I get that Great Artist. No matter, I have a couple units patroling around the the base in question, so I know if a settler is coming or something.

5 Turns. 4 Turns. 3 Turns. Two Turns. Cantwaitcantwaitcantwait...

Please tell me that Great Engineer icon isn't at one of my bases. Tell me City X hasn't betrayed me by inspiring some guy to pick up a Giant Hammer...

    ....

    You gotta be kidding me!

So, I reload from an earlier save. I make that Great Artist base into a city where half the frickin' population is forcefully assigned to be Starving Artists. The sight is strangely beautiful - a city where everyone is hungry, and the majority of its population is painting signs saying "WE NEED FOOD" or trying to see if their new latex paints are even remotely editable.

So, the clock ticks down, and I finally get my Great Artist! I do a little jig in my seat, and save my game, just for safety's sake.

Hmm, the harddrive is churning a bit too much. That's kinda...

*poof*, game crashes. First Crash To Desktop I've had in this game.

And that, my friends, is why Civ IV hates me
    It's a CB.

        What can I say...

In my last game, I was one tile - not turn, tile* - away from being the first one to navigate around the world.
        My mouse's arse still hurts...

        * Yes, obviously, one turn aswell, yes.

Lies. Civ4 hates you because you call its cities bases.

Such civ frustrations are a good thing! Helps you to appreciate those things that DO go in your favor.

They constantly remind me that once again, I have found yet another area of the game that I don't handle as well as I should. So then I am off to read more of Vel's threads.

Crossfire, read Vel's strategy threads in moderation. Too much focus & succesful application of those concepts can result in the game becoming TOO easy, and therefore disappointing.
