  • Does the AI understand "unofficial territories"?

Will AI's cross your borders (assuming you have Open Borders) to found bases that would be surrounded by your own?

This is hard to explain, so I made an example picture, located below.

In that example, the green dots are my bases, and green lines are my borders. I have orange enemies to my north, and red ones to the bottom.

Now, I've not yet put bases in the middle area, because I felt the need to close off expansion to the Yellow guys above. Will the orange one (or the red one, for that matter) walk through my territory to found bases in the middle, or does the AI effectively know that the area belongs to me, because I've boxed it in?

They'll walk right on past and settle in the middle if you sign Open Borders with them. Barring that, they'll sail around your cities if they have the capability. To the AI, open land is just open land, no matter who is surrounding it.

So your best bet is to not sign open borders with them, and to settle along the coasts to prevent them from landing ships on the shore, if you want to try and get all the land in the center.

Not a problem. These cities fall to my cultural influences quickly.

I had a similar situation once. One game I thought I played it smart and let the AI settle in my middle land figuring I could culture grab them and at first I was slowly grabbing their territory.
Well, apparently, somehow the AI got cullture bomb after culture bomb ...after culture bomb (oooof) and I ended up getting chewed up from within. By the time I realized what was happening, I didn't have the tiles to build an army to take ny cities back. Embarrassing show on my part.

As an aside, one thing I have noticed about the AI is that it too plays the land grab game, attempting to cut off land from you in the same fashion shown above.

I would call that an as smart move as humanly possible.

I don't know if that's neccesarily the case- a lot of times, the AI will build a city near me which will really annoy me- grab some resource I wanted, or some choice land. But while it's an annoyance to me, its position (10, 15 turns from the rest of their cities) just makes it easy pickings for me. The AI trying to cut you off is a good feature, but they need to rework the cost/benefit analysis so that the AI doesn't build cities solely out of spite.

That's not possible unless they get Great Artists. If that particular computer player keep getting GA's that's a problem on your side.

Usually the AI city if built too close or between yours will be of little benefit to them because it will be overcome by your culture, just make sure the cathredrals and Hermitage etc are built in neighbouring to guarantee the flip, if they culture bomb, just use your army, they are easy to capture, your army should never be too weak to launch an assault because if it is you are to vulnerable to a surprise assault on you.

This infection strategy is one I love! If I get a chance to get a city behind enemy lines or close to them, I'll pump up the culture very high asap to "breed" inside their territory.

The strategy mentioned by the OP, will only block of AIs temporary if you don't have open borders with them. I tend to never accept open borders untill the land I want is settled or only if the open borders mates are far away on an other island/ continent.

I just had an interesting experience with this. While playing Montezuma, Bismarck had built a city close to my borders, but about 20 tiles from his capital. I was about to start building Jaguars to take it out, after building my first Barracks, when I noticed that it wasn't there anymore. It seems while I wasn't looking, the Barbs took care of that problem for me. That will teach him!
