How can you advance explorers or scouts in experience?

Actually is there some strategy to improve the experience of all units. I am not much of a Warrior, and tend to be a builder, so my games usually lack the military option, though I did just try the Jaguar Rush strategy, and have been doing relatively well since then, though I didn't eliminate my opponent (Isabelle) until around 179 AD, and haven't really picked a different civ to take out.

Explorers and Scouts get experience from fighting animals in the very early game and from goody huts. Also from barracks and civic choices like normal units.

But if you want to level up scouts and explorers with your army, nah there is no military use to them so they don't really get any stronger so I just end up deleting them.
