Well maybe somebody can e-mail you a copy of the file in question and you can just put it in the appropriate directory. Or one of us could even attach it here.

      OK, cheers.

This is the version that I have and seems to be the cause of all my grief qasf.dll: 10.00.0000.3802

If anyone can post a newer version on here or email it to me it would be great. PM me if you want addy.

Other than this I can see another re-install of windows tonight.

        wookster,

Replacing one version of the dll with another version is not that easy. These files are protected by Windows. Try to rename your current qasf.dll and see what happens. Most likely, Windows will simply recreate a new copy of the original file. See

Microsoft Support is here to help you with Microsoft products. Find how-to articles, videos, and training for Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft 365, Windows, Surface, and more.

if you're interested in more details. There are ways to get around this protection, but you might create other problems on your system.

Let's see if we can figure out why you're having this problem:

        * When you installed Civ 4, did it offer to install (or update) your DirectX?

        * If yes, did you accept?

        * Did you try my earlier suggestion of running DXSETUP.exe from the DirectX9 folder on the Civ 4 CD?

There are several different flavors of DirectX 9.0C. To run Civ 4, you need to have the one that comes on the Civ 4 CD, or something more recent. The DirectX installation program should properly update your files, even if your current version shows 9.0C.

It did offer to install it,which I did, although it did appear to be a very quick installation.

I also tried running it from the CD but it was as if it recognised that i had 9c on and was an instant install.

I have had the pc wiped and tried again but failed.

I am embarrased to say but I have now given up. I have just got back from doing a trade in with Age of Empires hoping that it was the game but that refuses to work as well

I can see another re-install around the corner.

I'm assuming you have all the latest gfx card drivers and sound card drivers for your system already installed? If you just used the ones provided on CD with the cards then they might be out of date and not support DX9.0c

You could also try installing directX from microsofts website before installing civilisation and then refusing to install DX when Civ4 asks you to. (or AoE now)

AoE seems to have its own share of small bugs too. My main one was the sound refusing to come back after pausing the game.

Well I have just been told that I have a pc with a clean install and AoE up and running. I hope I haven't been too hasty binning Civ 4, I loved Civ III.

                  Fingers crossed

                    Civ4 is sooooo much better...

Well, enjoy AoE, once you get tired of that one, just can always make another atempt at running Civ4.

                      Thanks again.

I've tried a few forums for help, you've been the most helpful by far.

Somehow I can see me purchasing Civ again

Civ 4 uses routines that are unique to the game, so use the one on the disk.

I don't think Firaxis wrote their own custom version of directX 9.0c. Seems to me like a standard distribution.

That's the impression I get, though I could very well be wrong. I do know that they included routines that weren't available through Microsoft at the time of release. That's one thing that came up when people were having problems at first. They were firmly told to use the Direct X that came on the disk because of that.

That's only because MS hadn't released it at the time (it has by now?).
