  • Making AI's join a war?

How do you make AI's join a war? It seems like they never want to (Since I've got the game, I've only managed to make them join a war once or twice)

In my current game I'm Germany. Mansa Munsa (sp?) is friendly towards me (we have had defense packs several times, and has been at war with Napoleon several times because of it). There's not many negative relationship points, and those that are there are 2000+ year old

But I still can't get him to join a war (He's the second strongest, while Napoleon is the weakest... and pretty close by). The option in diplomacy is not red, but when I ask him to join the war he says I must be joking
How much gold do they want for it? He doesn't even accept when I have more than 6000 gold
This space is empty... or is it?

    Check his relations with Napoleon

I think it will also be dependent upon how friendly Mansa is to Napoleon. I’ve managed to do this a few times. The reason for doing this has generally been to avoid being caught in a war on two fronts. I find it most unnerving when, after a siege to break down the defenses, my ally has spend all his time destroying all those nice improvements around the city that I wanted to take.

Considering that Mansa has been at war with Napoleon 4-5 times within a few 100 years, their relationship is not what it used to be... Mansa also destroyed a few of Napoleons cities

What about tech-bribing? It's worked for me not only to join a war, but also that the AI declares war first (in order to soften my target) before I come in to grab weakened cities a few turns down the line.

AI civ personalities come into it too. MM is a tech focused builder and very reluctant to declare war unless you have a tech or two that he really wants. Genghis is usually quite happy to play mercenary - and it cuts both ways, I've noticed other hostile computer civs bribe him to attack me too.

I've noticed that this happens in all my games, no matter who's friendly and who's not

I doubt you can at this point, but try to bribe Napoleon to cut off all trade (if he has any) with Mansa. That'd be the only option I could think of... other than tech trading with Mansa.

Two techs was enough to convince Ramses II to help me defend against Alexander who was about to wipe me out. I was then able to strike a peace deal with Alexander only to have Genghis Khan invade me & destroy my already crippled empire.

I've done it plenty of times, sometimes they'll join for free if you're friendly enough and they dislike the other civ.

I've actually seen both Monty and Genghis change sides in a war. They make peace, then a few turns later attack their former allies. Always wise to get rid of the psycho civs as soon as they start falling behind in science (and they always do). Their extra weight, even with obsolescent units, can turn an obvious victory into a struggle for survival.

Worse is when you've battered down the defences and killed most of the units when your ally then takes the city with ease before you can.

Sounds like you need a larger army... or to play a game where you don't have Genghis in it

Even worse than that is when you're about to secure final victory, and they capitulate to your ally.

I do that to my AI allies whenever I can
