  • Is it me or does Civ4 still have bad memory leak problems?

I put this in general because I'm looking for feedback, not advice.

While the patch was a big improvement I still can't play on a standard map with 9 civs when the map starts to get uncovered. And when I end the game my computer essentially needs rebooting to get up to speed. Is this a recognized issue?

My PoS computer needs a few minutes to unload it from memory, but I definitely don't need to reboot after I quit.

In fact, the poor laptop's been on now for weeks without rebooting.

I start getting lag and jerkiness later in the game, but I don't have to reboot my machine to clear it up. Just quitting to desktop and restarting the game is good enough. It's much better than it used to be however.

Sometimes my computer seems to hang, but if I wait a for a minute or so, things come back to life. This usually happens after a trade for a map of a large portion of the world I have not seen yet. This is with 1 gigabyte of RAM, too.

I play on a slightly modified Huge Map (changed in the XML files from 32x20 to 40x25) with all Civs in play. I only have serious slow downs on the very first turn of the game or if I modify some of the game parameters (more commonly known as "cheat") in the middle of the game then hit the next turn bar. Those turns take forever. The hang up I used to get from map trading was solved by the last patch.

I always have to reboot after leaving civ after a long session deep into a game. I suppose if I was willing to wait 5 minutes for Windows to reshuffle everything it eventually might, but I never seem to get decent performance afterwards without a reboot.

I have 4 GB of RAM and I also get a fifteen-twenty second pause when trading maps. That behavior was happening since version 1.09. I am guessing that it is caused by a huge amount of graphical information (the land, animations, clouds, etc.) being added to the main interface view all at once.

That might also be cpu and vid dependent, too.--
because I don't notice that long of a pause on my system when doing a big-reveal map trade. I "only" have 2 gigs of ram, too.

My CPU and Vid are first-generation (I do not want to say what they are lest I be accused of bragging), so I do not think that it is a hardware issue. Civ runs great on my rig even on huge maps, and the only hiccups are when I trade maps.
