  • Caravels and missionaries

I see in the manual it states that a caravel can carry one scout, explorer, missionary, spy or great person. Can enter rival civilizations territory without triggering war. So can you unload those units on their land as well and without triggering a war thus
sneaking in missionaries to convert cities?

Man, that's a really good question... anybody have an answer?

      Definitely worth a try

Or perhaps the missionary is not able to disembark

        I believe not.

Only a spy could enter their land without triggering war.

What really chaps my ass is when I do all the leg work by bringing a missionary half way around the world, only to find that the other civ is in the civic that wont let my missionary do his work! I forget the name of it "no non-state religion spread" theology ...

Definitely not. I tried it once but my Missionary would have triggered war if I had continued. As long as they stay on the ship they're alright though.

I wonder if it's possible to gift the caravel (and missionary on board it) to the closed-border AI, kind of a trojan horse infriltration of the forbidden missionary...

You can see what civics the AI are running. When opening up the trade window, it's in the upper right-hand corner next to the leaderhead.

This is in response to Shr3dz...

Kind of a costly gift but it might work.

Or you could probably just select the Missionary itself, no need to lose the Caravel as well. I'll have to try that.

I frequently gift missionaries to AIs to let me get on with building the next one as soon as possible. Some AIs use them the way you'd hope, others don't.

Nope...you have to have open borders to "sneak in" a missionary.

On Contentents, though, I often do use caravels with missonaries to convert people on the other continent I have open borders with to my religion; it's neat that you can actually do that and make some friends before anyone on the other continent has the ability to attack you at all.
