  • resources and happiness

I understand that if you have only one of a resource that if you trade it you no longer get the benefit of that resource. So typically you want to have 2 or more of something before you trade it. My question is are the effects cumulative? For example silver provides +1 happiness and +4 commerce and +1 production with mine. Do those numbers double if you have 2 sources of silver with mine? Or is it better to trade resources that you have more than one of? Also how about hit musicals, singles, and movies that only provide +1happiness is it better to have more than one of those or better to trade the extras for something else?

My understanding is the coins & hammers are yours to keep & non-tradeable, but the happiness you can only get one of but they're all tradeable.

No, once you have one of these things, any further source will have no impact on your empire. So you may as well try to trade them if you can.

        Trading 1 of 1...

Someone else posted about this in the tips and strategies, but if you have only "1 of 1" of a luxury item and can trade it straight across to another civ for another luxury item, you come out with the same happiness modifiers, but you get credit in diplomacy over time for being a good trading partner.

So wait... if you have 1 clam, for instance, and you traded that clam to a foreign power for something, you'd still get the benefits of the clam, minus any happiness the resource would bring? (just using a random example, there)

I have clam, you have fish, I want fish.

Even if that fish is your only source of fish (health), you're better off trading it when it is a like item exchange. Health items for health items, happiness for happiness, because you get a diplomacy boost, and you get the health benefit from the clam I'm going to trade you for the fish you're giving up. You have no net loss in health, but gain in diplomacy.

              Hope this explains things

Some confusing answers he so let me try to clarify.

When you build the necessary improvement on a special resource you may be able to work the tile for whatever food/production/commerce that the improved tile. As long as that improvement or city remains there, that is all yours to keep and will get converted into population growth, buildings and units, science and gold.

If that resource is linked to your trade network (usually by road but sometimes by river), you also get access to the bonus offered by the resource. In the case of silver, this would give each of your cities an extra happy face. When the resource is linked to your trade network, you may also trade that resource to another civilisation but, if it is the only silver you have, you will lose the bonus. The bonus is simply the happiness modifier and not the value of the silver mine tile if you are working it. Note also that you do not have to work the tile in question to get the happiness bonus.

If you have two silver mines linked to your trade network then you do not get an extra bonus happy in your cities. However, you can trade silver to one other civilisation and still keep one silver yourself for the bonus. NB: If you trade silver with two civs you will lose the happiness bonus it provides to your cities.

There is, of course, the possibility of using trade to swap a “non-duplicate” resource to another civilisation. You lose the bonus provided by your resource but gain that provided by the other. This might be done for several reasons

              1) Trading a health resource like pigs for one like rice would tend to benefit you in the early game when you have granaries but not supermarkets.
              2) Similarly in happy resources if you have lots of markets then silk, fur, whales and spices are more valuable to you than incense.
              3) You might be have excess resources of one type but short of the other. Swap your cattle for gold and redress the balance.
              4) Given the choice you’d prefer your citizens to be unhealthy than unhappy.
Occasionally you might want some strategic resource for a short period.

Hmm, I never thought of that. I'll have to keep that in mind.
