Can somone please explain to me what "chopping" a building (or wonder) is and how it is done?

I understand about chopping trees gets you hammers, but does that mean you gett o us ALL those hammers at once somehow?

    Thanks.

Exactly right. Chopping down a forest will give you X hammers toward whatever you are building. The value of "X" is driven by the distance the forest IS from the city, and any modifiers in play at the time (ie., Industrious folk building a wonder get that bonus applied to chopped hammers...folks running Org. Religion and building Infrastructure get THAT bonus applied to chopped hammers...etc).

So...plan your chops. Trees are not infinite. Chop when it'll do you the most good on a "per hammer" basis...or, when you're in dire straits and in need of a quick bit of defense (or offense...whichever).

Oh...and ALWAYS FREAKIN CHOP if you plan on building a city on a forested tile. Unforgiveable waste of hammers if you don't.

What is the distance limit on chops? Like how far away from the city can you chop a forest and receive the bonus? Is it just the tiles on the "fat cross" or any tile within your cultural borders?

Any tile not in enemy territory. From memory on normal speed chops give 30 hammers up to distance 3 away from city, and you lose 5 hammers for each additional distance after that.

So distance of 6 away gives you 15 hammers.

Distance is the usual cultural radius distance, 1 for each non-diagonal move and 1.5 for each diagonal move, rounded down.

So when you chop outside your own borders then the hammers go to your city nearest the forest being choped?

when we are at it, have we got a thread with three chop multipliers (or a list of the building something multi's)

I know that once I got 60 hammers from a chop, and since that was the only time I was mightily suprised (I normally get 37, which is the Organized Rel bonus) I think it must have been building a stonehenge while having access to stone to get 60. On normal speed that that means if you have stone you can build the Stonehenge in 2 chops. Will have to try it out.

Anyhow the proper chop timing adds a lot to a good empire

Unless it's so far from your other cities as to make the hammer return not worth the worker-turns. In the early expansion phase I sometimes find it useful to plonk down my first couple of cities some distance from the capital (in order to grab critical resources, or choke off a peninsula or something).

Building Angkor Wat in capital with Bureaucracy and Stone got 90 (normal on epic is 45) so I got the stone bonus but not the Bureaucracy
Building Hanging Gardens in capital with Bureaucracy, Org Religion, Forge and Stone got 90.
Building settler in capital got 60 without any bonuses.

I’m also noticed that Org Religion and Forge multipliers do sometimes affect the chop number. In particular, if you chop your cheap buildings your trait bonus for that so it can be very beneficial to time to chop to coincide with the completion of the building and thus extend the 100% bonus into the next build.

Same with any differential bonuses on chopping. If you can time the chop to complete as the building completes, it should carry the bonus production over fully.

One warning though. I’ve noticed exceptions to this rule but no pattern to them.

See...I disagree with this...not the notion of founding cities far away...that can be a good thing, but if you're not able to chop the forest tile before you plan, then I'd rather forego planting a city there and chop/settle that spot later, or, if the city site is THAT compelling, then I can surely MAKE a little time for the worker (I mean, if it's a hugely potent city site, then surely it's worth the extra time spent to squeeze out a few more precious hammers).

The only time I don't do this is, of course, if the city site/forest tile is too far away to net any hammers, but that's pretty much a given I guess...

With the right civics, etc., you can get over 100 hammers in a chop.
