My understanding is that 'barbaroi' meant 'people who don't speak Greek.' I believe the ancient Chinese word with a meaning similar to barbarian translates to 'people who don't speak Chinese.'

Based on these standards animals--speaking neither Greek nor Chinese--qualify as barbarians, as well as all non-Greek non-Chinese "civilizations" in the game.

On the first day of play, back in October, a friend looking over my shoulder, asked 'is that the French?' when a bear moved into sight.

            Truly, barbarians (they eat snails).

Reminds of the good people of Hartlepool imprisoning some monkeys from a shipwreck on the understanding they were French sailors.

              I like the animals.

If I was better at modding and less apathetc, I would create a mod where the player would control the animals. The player's goal would try to keep the various civs from spreading and growing for as long as possible by eating settlers, workers, and escorts foolish enough to leave their borders and enter the player's habitat. Maybe the player could have "dens" or some such where reinforcements would spawn from that would have to be protected from humans.

When you research Genetics, you should be able to create powerful mutant flying bear units and other creatures based on the animal models.

More like "people who aren't Chinese." Chinese = civliized; everyone else = barbarian.

Well at the time their way of saying China was Tianxia which literally translates to 'Under Heaven'. This was because they believed that heaven was above china, and everybody else was off beyond the horizon so they weren't under heaven, thus barbarians. Anybody who has seen the movie 'Hero' may recognise Tianxia as being what is written in big characters in the sand.

Actually Chinese refer their land as ZhongTu, which means "the middle earth". TianXia were used in a more generic way to refer the known world, including the barbaric lands outside ZhongTu.

I like having the animals as well.

Anyone remember the giant squids from "The World of Jules Vernes" scenario from Civ 2? I think they should make a comeback.
