How so? Maces and axes are usually shorter than your typical longsword AFAIK

Yeah, but only the end of a mace or an axe is the "working" end; if your enemy is too close, your arm's range of movement must be restricted in order to hit him with the end of your mace or axe.

Actually, you can choke up on the haft, so they're more useful than a sword close up. True, you won't have the same power, but you have the option of not dropping your weapon to pull out a dagger.

None of those weapons are effective at less than arms length. If we're talking about getting that close I'd want something like a dagger or dirk.

Wouldn't that be about as effective as hitting someone with the handle of a mace/axe?

Maybe that can be a new thread... "Would you rather be hit by the wooden handle of an axe or mace, or have someone take the sharp edge of a sword to your skin in a saw-like motion?"

Most swords, can be used 2 ways. Slash and stab. an axe or mace is limited to 1 way (hack or bonk).

The Katana is for newbies. Its all about the No-Daichi (basicly a 2 handed Katana, the "crazy" guy in "the seven samurai" used one). I too am very fond of the look of the katana, but it is slashing only, sacrificing stabbing potential for more cutting ability, much like a sabre or scimitar.

Noone throws a spear. they weigh a ton!~ Javalins are for throwing. and I think the Pila (pilum) was used by the romans as a primary weapon in lue of a gladius for the "ease of manufacture" reason stated above. More legionars for cheaper. If a pilum got stuck in you shield, it would be that much harder to manuever your shield where you needed it.

another option would be a 2 part weapon:
one side mace (massive maul, aka boldier on a stick) other side axe.

the weight of the maul would increase the power of the axe, which would make it slower on the 2nd swing, but if that first swing hit it would be a definete kill.

The katana is definitely not for newbies! The samurai practised through their lives to master using the katana and wakizashi. At the beginning they used a bow and an arrow while riding a horse, but in their golden age it was swords (and maybe the tanto).

The katana can be used by both hands or with only one hand. It's all about the technique.
...and also katana has a sharpen tip for stabbing.

You know why the Samurai "practised through their lives to master using the katana and wakizashi"? Because it was the best common weapon they had in Japan. Weapon-making progressed very differently in Europe. An exaggeration of this would be saying that a hunting spear is "definitely not for newbies" because some natives practised through their lives to master using it; but when compared to the rifles that killed these natives, it wasn't an efficient weapon.

well... I wasn't saying that the katana would be "the best" weapon of choise. I just answered the title of this thread. I would choose it because I practise kendo and iaido, and therefore I'm quite familiar with the use of the katana.

edit: and IMO katana is one of the most beautiful weapons in the world.

Axe. Not really a finesse weapon, but combines the best of both worlds, the weight of the ax head, and the edge of a blade.

Takes a lot of strength to use, though, and the more strength you have, the better chance you have of finesse.
