IRL, guns ships carry surface to air missles and thus can fight back, and have flares and chaff for defense against enemy missles.

A tech sargent in vietnam is testing new guided missles without much luck, and asks the manufacturer what SAM stands.
Manufacturer response: "Surface to Air Missle"
Sargent: "Can you please send Surface to Aircraft Missles instead?"
