Global warming does occur more often in games with many large, highly developed cities, it was worst in the last game i played, I suspect it was not as bad in earlier games because the UN forced everyone onto the Ecology civic. I would try forcing people onto that civic if global warming becomes a serious issue.

(laughs) well, there were two city enclaves that my fellow countries established in my borders, and I wanted to see how long it took culture to envelop them. That, and not all my cities were totally developed when I got my diplomatic victory, and it was a cool map. I converted everyone to environmentalism just after that.

Just about all the cities on the map are pretty huge, so that makes sense. I just got fed up after every turn kept making me lose 3-5 tiles of productive land without any way of fixing the situation.

Apparently not building coal or nuclear still creates global warming. I've had several games now where I've decided not to invest in either, and global warming still showed up just as frequently as in games where I had them. I'm fairly convinced it's a function of the computer players' decisions at this point.
