At the beginning of the turn you get spammed messages.

    City_Name built X and now builds Y.

Other_City 's cultural borders have expanded.

    Other_Civ builds Wonder_I_Wanted

    etc.

Is there a way to slow these messages down or review them later?

Do you get messages for civilizations getting destroyed even if you haven't met that civilization yet?

Lastly, has anyone used that 'alarm' in the options page? It asks for entering hours and minutes. Is that the frequency with which it goes off, or is that a time of day that it will go off at? (I really need to try to make an effort to get less absorbed in long game.)

There's a little icon on the left upper corner, the "log" icon. Just click it.

That alarm is supposed to work like a regular alarm clock - you set the hour and the minute and it rings at that time.

Make sure your speakers aren't up to load for the alarm though...
"You are one of the cheerleaders for this wasting of time and the wasting of lives. Do you feel any remorse for having contributed to this "culture of death?" Of course not. Hey, let's all play MORE games, and ignore all the really productive things to do with our lives.
Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess."

I thought this was how it worked but it doesn't. The time you enter will be how long before the alarm goes off, not the time it will go off.
