    If you have ships carrying troops stacked with some other ships, the full ships will always defend last - the game chooses the defender so s to preserve your troop transports.

            Are you sure that crossing a river gives a bonus to the defender,and not a penalty to the attacker?

                As a related question, how exactly does Combat I, etc. work? Does it reduce the defender's power by the percent alloted by the attacker's combat, or something else? I'm kind of confused since it is not a direct bonus. What would be more advantagous, anyways: What actually happens, or a bonus to the attacker?

                  Combat promotions are quite a direct bonus - a bonus to that particular unit. All promotions are like that, in fact.
