Why does the AI switch religions so often?

Is there any advantage to this? I hardly think so.

I discovered/was hindu and most of the ai civs on my continent (terra world) were buddhist. But then for some reason they all became jews. I converted as well to try to remain on peaceful terms. And then, every civ on our continent was jewish except for one. Eventually I got free religion, and did that. And by then the AI's had switched religions again. Only about half were jewish by then. What gives?

They assume the religion that is MOST prevalent in and around them, with the exception of thier own founded religions
