The closest thing you have doubling for patrol is giving one unit multiple movement orders (shift key I believe) and then adding as many as wanted.

They would be built in addition to other tile improvements without destroying them. You could string them along your borders and they would generate messages of nearby foreign movement. Maybe even with an upgrade to see spies or missionaries too? How about a coast watcher for coastal hexes, or a sonar station that could see submarines?

            Yeah... doesn't quite make sense
"You are one of the cheerleaders for this wasting of time and the wasting of lives. Do you feel any remorse for having contributed to this "culture of death?" Of course not. Hey, let's all play MORE games, and ignore all the really productive things to do with our lives.
Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess."

              Remember Pearl Harbor!

I'm hoping for a chance for advance warning. Botched preparations, spies, etc.

Another example, Barbarossa wasn't really a surprise attack, Stalin just chose to not believe his advisors. An army was gathering at his borders... In CIV, I'd be micromanaging a city on the other side of my empire.
I've allways wanted to play "Russ Meyer's Civilization"

But that wouldn't work in civ. Nobody's going to be stupid enough not to believe the computer when it says someone is going to attack you there.

Sneak attacks really tick me off. I hate them, especially when they make no sense (a pleased nation with the same religion attacking me)

But, I do it, so why shouldn't the AI? I just let fly at Salladin because I want his land, sugar and UN votes. I can only get one of those things through trade.

So after reading this thread I've changed my mind - We need sneak attacks - without them the AI will just get creamed. And you can avoid sneak attacks by having a reasonable military. The AI is programmed to come after you if you are weak, it won't declare war against the strong - at least not often...

As for the topic at hand - I'd like patrol, but I'd like a proper sentry mode, too.

Sentrys by nature don't just look for enemies, they look for everyone... I want a sentry mode that is like the one in Civ III - standard sentry (wake up on everyone) and war sentry (wake up on enemy only)

It should also wake up whenever the unit is within the LOS of your sentry, or whenever a unit passes the LOS of your sentry.

My Destroyers with +1move for circumnavigation, and Navigation 1 and Refirgeration move a looooong way in a turn, they can blow right past a sentry and be on the other side of his LOS in one turn. There should be a flashing marker to indicate that an enemy (or non-allied unit) has passed a sentry, so you don't know where they are if they are out of your LOS, but you can tell where they went...
