Defensive Pacts-permanent Allinces-not Working Well?

Well, I've never seen anyone leaping to my rescue when I'm attacked. I've decided to only sign them if I'm worried about keeping a close neighbor happy.

I have noticed that if you have open borders, the neighbors will help defend you from barbs both inside your territory and those on the far side from them as well.

And if your allies, the computer will send its military units after enemy cities, sometimes a different city than you wanted them to pick and often by a different route than you may have wanted.
(Picking a route that doesn't counter an attack on you)
