Since I am so new to the Civ world, I am going to work on the assumption that I saw it incorrectly.

I will be sure to pay more attention at the start of my next game. If it does happen again, I will bring it up in the Bug Reports section.

Not so. If that happened it would get very annoying to found multiple religions.

I started a new game, it worked fine and just as you described.

I most have been blinded by seeing all the wonderful graphics for the first time!
