New guy needs help.....

First post here. Just got Civ IV and fell in love much to the wife's dismay. Have played one game on defaults and am working on a second. I have what maybe a silly question:

How does one assign a National Religion?

As for your question: In the upper right corner of the map, there's some buttons, one of them looks like two folded hands:

Click on that one and you'll get a window where you can among other things assign a state religion.

Yep. I think the shortcut key is F9.

Thanks guys, I did find the Religion screen (F9) unfortunately once I got there, I couldn't see how to assign a religion.

I guess I shuld state that I founded Hinduism (I think that was it) but, on the Religion screen, when I clicked on any of the religions, it gave me a message saying somehting like cannot convert to Hinduism, etc.

Any thoughts? Thanks for the welcome as well!

You can only convert to a religion once it has been founded and spread to at least one of your cities.

You will have automatically become Hindu when you founded it, and you'll have to wait until one of the other religions spreads into your territory before you can switch.

One more question. On the main screen, where the list of the other leaders are there is a religious icon next to some of there names. Does this signify what the national religion is?

Yes. Sometimes you'll see two symbols. I'm not positive but I think that means they're switching from one religion to another.

The symbol will indicate their state religion, yeah. If it also has a *, that means that civ founded that religion. The F9 screen will also indicate which civs founded which religions. EDIT: well, actually it will show which civ currently controls the holy city of that religion.

If you founded Hinduism, a popup will show as soon as it's created asking you if you want to adopt it. The fact that you can't convert to Hinduism probably means that it already is your state religion. You should see the icon beside your name on the screen.

I thought that I had founded Hinduism but, there is no icon next to my name.

So you didn't get a popup when you founded it asking if you wanted to convert? You should maybe post this in Bug Reports, something doesn't sound right. Especially if you can't select it in the Religious Advisor screen.
