  • CIV IV wont install

I put the install CD (Disc 1) in and autorun brings up a menu. I click on 'Install' and an install wizard status bar shows and after a couple of minutes I get the following error message:

    Unhandled Exception
    Error Number: 0x80040702
Description: Failed to load DLL: DSETUP
    Setup will now terminate.

I exchanged the game for another copy and I get the same error. I tried installing the game on a friend's computer and it works so at least I know I have a good copy. I attached my Dxdiag file. Any suggestions???

    Thanks.

I think you may need to do a clean reinstall of Windows.

I am assuming you used an account with full administrator rights. Otherwise, try that first.

Ouch, re-install windows? I can still run other games via CD though. If re-installing windows is the only thing that "might help", then I'm affraid I'll just have to get my money back and forget about it cuz its not worth that risk. What does the error mean anyhow???

Re-installing windows is not some super difficult thing .

For me it is. Do I not have to back-up all of my files? The last time I re-installed windows I never got my video card working properly (amongst other things) and ended up buying a new computer. Is there anything we can try before resorting to re-installing windows? Again, what does the error mean that calls for this action to correct it???

It just looks like you may have a system file that's foobared.

I don't understand why you couldn't get your video card working properly - all you need to do is to install the driver that probably comes on a CD with the card. At worse all you need to do is to buy a new video card, not a new computer.

Windows is like that. It can sort of work but not at 100%. In fact, I believe that is the case for most of us.

Could it be that I need to update the firmware for my CD/DVD drives???

                It seems unlikely.
