  • Waking and grouping: There must be a better way.

Excuse the ignorance of this question if it is too noobie, but I am just trying to get the hang of grouping my troops and making my war periods go a lot faster. My question is how best to wake up and group units that are sleeping in a city.

For example, this happened to me yesterday: It's late in the game and I have about twenty cities. I'm almost at a domination victory, but I have to go to war and capture about 3-4 more cities, or waste a bunch of time waiting for the last 50 turns to tick down. Anyway, I have used extra production in my cities to build up troops for just such an occasion.

So I have a city that has ten different units in it, including two Tanks, two Mech. Infantry, and two Artillery in it. I want to wake up just those six units from the city, group them, and move the group to the edge of my border where they are going to invade from. I used to do each unit individually, but that gets tedious after a while.

So, to accomplish this, I double-click on the city to open it, then click on a unit I wish to wake. This closes the city screen and activates the unit. I click or arrow him one square away out of the city. Then I have to repeat this, opening and closing the city window five more times, to wake each unit and move them out of the city. Now I finally have them stacked up on the same square, so I can double-click them to group them, and finally I can move the whole set.

This takes a long time, especially if I have to repeat it in six different cities to wake up all my armies. Is there a better way? Do you leave armies out of the cities so they can stay grouped? Do armies that were grouped stay grouped when they are in cities? Should I put the Artillery separately to allow bombard versus attack?

    Thanks for any advice.

Hold down ctr and left click to select all units of that type.
Hold down shift and left click to add units to a group.
Hold down ctr and shift and left click to add all of one type of unit to a group.

You can also set a way point by control clicking on a city (to select all cities on a continent or you can hold down shift and select the cities you want to use the waypoint) and then shift right-clicking on where you want the waypoint.

maybe I'm stupid, but that seems confusing to me.

I found out about holding down the alt key. That helped me last night, as I was in the same situation as him above. I wanted to go to war again, so I woke all my tanks. But it'd be nice if we had a wake all button like civ3.

Just put them all to sleep and then wake them up?

That takes a while with 30 tanks on a slow computer.
