Some people obviously don't get sci-fi. I love the genre far more than history, so it will always remain more compelling.

I would challenge the notion that Civ is about Earth. If that was the case, the emphasise of the game would be playing earth maps with historically appropriate civ placement. Outside of the mod community, civ is not about earth. Risk is more about earth than Civilization IV.

Civ is most certainly about Earth. The Civs are major (essentially) terran powers, you're researching major tools and technologies that are the bedrock of human development... to say that civ isn't about Earth is stretching.

Well, I am a SF fan, and I still don't like it
The unit workshop really sucked. All units looked the same. I had no spirit.
Besides that, you don't need SMAC to implement it, it can be implemented in civ5 as well.

I'll buy SMAC 2 most obviously anyway though

I loved the SE idea (and I'm glad they put it into Civ4), but the workshop was just annoying

I do like Sci-fi though, so I'm keeping my eye on the SMAC mod for Civ4

I don't know why some players would find the Unit Workshop annoying. I guess it's something you either love or hate.

To me, it is a logical evolution. You need fewer basic units and yet you can create your own custom units for almost any tasks on hand.

Suppose we have a UW in Civ 4, then we don't need Warriors, Axemen, Spearmen, Maceman, etc. units. All we need is a basic Melee unit. You get the Axeman by replacing the basic Stick with the better Axe.

They're probably working on another patch, and soon (I hope) we'll hear about the first eXpansion Pack

I do see the point, but for some reason I just never liked it
Maybe it just takes some time to get used to it, I've only played 5-6 games of SMAC

Yes,I still remember, back in 1991,one friend told me about a new game, entirely different, began in stoneage and ended in the future, not just for kids, not to lose.
                            My friend was right!
                            Best regards,

I want more sequels of old games to please this old gamer....

SMAC 2 would be cool, but what I am really drooling over would be Master of Magic 2. Master of Magic was an amazing combination of Civ and Heroes of Might and magic with stacked combat that was ripped off by the Age of Wonders games. The Age of Wonders series were pretty close to Master of Magic, but they just did not quite do it for me like the original game (I think it was the open-ended civ-like building of MoM that appealed to me, rather than the more static scenarios of AoW, where most of the cities and resources were scripted and not randomly generated). I would love to see Sid do a sequel for Master of Magic, and hopefully he could get some of the original SimTex people involved. It would be even better if MoM included some of the newer civ concepts such as culture and unit promotions.

Also, I would love to see a Moo4 done by the original SimTex people that would play more like an updated Moo2, which has always been one of my favorites and I was STILL playing multiplayer games of right up until Civ4 was released.
