  • wow, time marches on

Just a thought I wanted to spew, you can delete it if you want, no replies needed.

I remember looking at the civ2 box and tinking "wow, an isometric view!!"...then I got it.

It seems like not long ago that civ 3 was released...and we all played it and speculated about civ4, not thinking that it would ever be made at all.

Civ 4 is here. And we are all playing it and speculating about civ5.

It seems like every version that no one thought would come, gets here in the blink of an eye retrospectively.

As life goes on, civ 5 will be here before you know it etc... and then you will realize that the franchise will go on and on long after you are gone.

And for me, I am dreaming of SMAC2 which I don't think will ever be made unfortunately....but the point is that it will be made.

    damn...my beer spilled

In my mind now, Civilization has reached near perfection. If Alpha Centauri has lasted me 8 years thus far, I see Civ IV lasting me at least that long. SMAC 2 would just be icing on the cake. If it doesn't come, I'm sure the mod community will cook up some interesting Mars senarios for Civ IV.

Civ 5 will be met with huge expectations - thats one thing for sure.

          In comparsion:
Civ 3 was not mod-friendly and the game in fact was quite straightforward with few strategic decissions to make. For me Civ 3 did not have a very long lifespan and was rather quickly uninstalled.

Matters with Civ 4 is dfferent.
The game is so komplex yet mod-friendly that it will probably still have some freshness when Civ 5 arrives.
          GOWIEHOWIE! Uh...does that
          even mean anything?

Aside from the interesting spelling and grammar, I agree completely. I enjoyed Civ3 for a while, but it really didn't add much to the franchise. It was a way to introduce and explore unique civilizations and units, but little else. Civ4 is a true evolutionary step in Civilization.

It's hard to imagine at this point in time what Civ5 will be like. Civ4 is such a huge step forward that it will take time to digest it and think of ways to improve it (at least for me)

I hope Civ 5 will remove some of the rules now we have, making it less complicated but more comples and deep at the same time. Make it more like Go, IOW.

Also make the game feel more like playing with an empire instead of a collection of cities. Civ 4 has moved in that direction quite some distance but they still need to shift the focus more to the nation as a whole and away from managing individual cities.

watch it...isn't that what sank MOO3? (from what i've read, never played it)

No. The failure of MoO 3 is stemmed from an unrealistically grandiose design with too much details. We are not talking about detailed models that can translate into nice, smoth code that a processor can crunch happily. We are talking about a fuzzy kind of details.

I was one of the few people who predicted this after looking at the initial design plans.

As long as Civ sticks to models that can be handled nicely with number crunching, they can have rather detailed ones without taxing modern processors much.

With the modability for CivIV there ought to be some great mods that really extend the lifetime of the game.

(not that I'm anywhere close to learning the basic game yet)

I don't hope SMAC2 will ever be released.
I just prefer civ any day above SMAC. Civ is about Earth. SMAC is just civ in space.

Let Firaxis focus on the real civ, not on the game they developped when civ was not in their hands.
I always believed that there would be a civ4. I think civ5 will be more of a let down. After a huge success it's always hard to folow up.

It's easier to come with civ4 after civ3 then with civ5 after civ4. Not to mention that civ needed civ3. Borders and culture were developped and experienced with in civ3. Civ4 has been build on that experience.

Besides that, we'll see how much we can mod with the SDK toolkit. Perhaps there's no need for civ5 anymore after we recieved it

civ 3 did indeed bring in culture and borders and I don't think it gets enough for doing that.

We'll have to differ on SMAC though. Certainly if you aren't a sci-fi fan, then you won't like it.

And I wouldn't want to divert dev time, but I think it's very possible to create both games well. Hire more people. wink wink

Even if you are not a sci-fi fan, the Unit Workshop and Social Engineering were (still are) great innovations.
