  • Permanent alliances available under 'custom game' only

Apparently, permanent alliances are available in custom games only. Should they have been allowed in 'Play Now!' games as well?

    It's really a non-issue.

Permanent alliances are not a widely used feature, but for those who do want to use them I don't see any problem with going to the custom game screen to enable them.

Permanent alliances are so permanent (duh, it is exactly what the name says), but maybe semi-permanent alliances are an option (like in Alpha Centauri), but then again, if alliances can be broken, it is nothing more than a way to get into unwanted wars to find your "pactmate" nullifies the alliance with you and make peace with the other civ. Leaving you at war.
So maybe they should remain permanent. But I am getting a little off-topic here.

BTW I voted for Yes, because I think it should make no difference which game type (now or custom) you play on tech or diplomacy.

Play Now is intended for new players, thus the screens are kept as easy as they can possibly be and the options limited. Including extra options there, such as Permanent Alliances, Raging Barbs or whatever would undermine the purpose of the function.

Custom Game is intended for, well, players who know what they're doing.

Permanent Alliances are an unbalanced function and better used 'at your own' risk. Unbalanced in SP, that is. So it's good that it's not available at the newbie setup screen .

I tried to start a game with the 'Play Now' option, but was quickly annoyed that you couldn't chose much... that's when I discovered the 'Custom Game' option, which gives you the options that you want

One thing I would like to see in 'Custom Game' is the option to preview an example of the map settings you've chosen (without it being that map you end up playing). It's not much use now, but it sure could be usefull as I just got the game, not knowing what the different map types would produce...
This space is empty... or is it?

I'd also like it to tell me what the leader traits mean like it does in the Play Now screen.

I tend to forget all the bonuses associated with "Creative" or "Industrious" for example.

I wish a mouseover function would be added to the leader names to explain the bonuses in the Custom Game screen.

I usually always play custom games, and I usually always turn permanent alliances on.

Having said that.. the game never lasts long enough to make them useful. You have to discover communism (I think) in order to pull up the alliances, and then the AI won't join in an alliance with you unless you've previously been allies during war time.

Like I said.. I always keep them on, just in case they ever become helpful, but so far.. nope.

I've never seen them as 'useful' for me. But I have seen them affect my game play.

In one game, I was planning for a time victory. There was 1 opponent (Hapshetsup, IIRC) that was too far along for me to beat in SS. And I wasn't liked well enough for Diplomacy. So I figured I'd stay on top of the score, and just use a late game war to harass that other opponent from building the SS.

Then 3 mid-tier civs all generate a permanent alliance with each other, and I was suddenly waaaaaayyyyyyy behind in score.

That obliterated my original plan. Ended up trying to go for the SS as a fallback plan, but was beat to that, as I had expected.

I don't use it, but something is wrong with my custom games (it doesn't play at the right difficulty level), so I always use Play Now. Even though I can't disable tech trading

I only play custom games (I love them raging barbarians ). Never have a problem with any of the settings.

Try to use it to your benefit, then. Discover a tech and trade with a whole bunch of different empires to get a bunch of different tech.

I would like to have a submissive pakt option in the next patch.

Edit: ops, i mean submissive "alliance"
Edit1: on the other hand this can hardly be called an "alliance". i dont know.

you dug up a week+ old thread to post something completely nonsensical and unrelated.
"You are one of the cheerleaders for this wasting of time and the wasting of lives. Do you feel any remorse for having contributed to this "culture of death?" Of course not. Hey, let's all play MORE games, and ignore all the really productive things to do with our lives.
Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess."

You quickly grabbed the opportunity to post a rant?

I suggest you inform yourself first what the thread is about and what all these funny words mean before posting "something completely nonsensical and unrelated." Looking at your regdate its no wonder that you are confused
