  • Oddities with animals

I am finding that my strength 2 warriors and strength 1 x 2 scouts consistently win far more than the 50% they should facing lions, panthers and wolves - who also have a strength of 2 - on open ground. Why is that?

Well Scouts for one get 100% against animals.

My scouts and warriors are not so lucky. They have been gobbled up a lot lately, even when on forests or forested hills!! It is very rare for me to have a scout live long enough to get upgraded to an explorer.

Of course, it is only an even fight on open ground if your warriors do not have a combat promotion, are unfortified, and are not accross a river. Also animals do not get defensive bonuses from terrain, much like cavalry and catapults.

Scouts can get upgraded?! Holy *stuff*, I didn't know that. I guess that shows how long my scouts are around too.

I believe you get a combat bonus against barbarians, depending on your difficulty level.
Warrior vs. Barbarian Warrior on Prince, no promotions, no terrian modifiers, I believe I get 2.0 vs 1.8
            Same applies vs animals.

Yes, I realized that just after I posted. Too late though.

I'm pretty sure on Noble you get a 10% bonus. Saw something about it in the combat log.

No idea. Check the combat log after fighting a barb. I think it says +10% for vs. barbarians.

I've never seen that explorer unit either, it comes too late to be worth building
This space is empty... or is it?

I did not even know there was a such thing as a combat log. Anyway, found the answer there: Units gain a small bonus versus barbarians (5%) and a large bonus against animals (a whopping 30%).

                            Case closed.

I thought the intended purpose was for scouts and warriors to hold their own against animals. The intended purpose of animals was to prevent people from sending out unescorted settlers (which I still do anyways...)
