Just for giggles, does anyone know what the Inca speak in-game?

I think the Egyptians speak Arabic along with the Arabs. Reasonable, I guess. Can an Arabic speaker confirm this?

The language is Quechua indeed. Horribly difficult language. After living in Peru for a year I still only know a few very very basic sentences in Quechua...

Well, given that the Egyptians are supposed to be Ancient Egyptians (the ones who built the pyramids and all that), I would guess they are supposed to speak Egyptian, since Arabic didn't really become a common language there until what, the seventh century AD? I suppose it would sound like Arabic to a non-Semite (just like Swedish sounds like Norwegian to a non-Scandinavian like myself), since it was a semitic language, or at least related to the semitic languages. Of course, not being Arabic or an Arabic speaker, I can't be certain about this.

And since I guess no-one actually speaks ancient Egyptian anymore, Firaxis can't really be sure if the Egyptians are actually speaking anything like the stuff that was spoken a few thousand years ago. But I still like to think that they tried to get as close to the "real stuff", rather than just going "Ah, well who cares anyway, no-one can tell the difference anyway!"

So their UU is the same name as their language? Odd.

                Well, not really.

I mean, let's say that the German UU was some kind of an Axeman. Naturally, he'd be "German Axeman". But since that doesn't really look good, esp. when you try to get the info on an actual unit in the game and it says something like "German German Axeman", it might look better to call him "Deutch Axeman". Now, "Deutch" is just German for "German", and I'd guess "Quechua" is in the same position: It's just Incan for "Incan".

Good logic, except I can't recall offhand another UU that is just named as the Civ or it's language, despite the fact that the same 'problem' would occur for many.

No, the Panzer is much, much better.

Yes I wondered the same thing. The Praetorian Guard were not a unit produced on a large scale. I'd have prefered Legions/Legionaires as the Roman UU.

Except to be the same as the Incan warrior, the German Axeman would have to be called "Deutch" alone.

                          ACK!

it's 'deutsch' not 'deutch'... and for ancient egyptian pronounciation it would have been wise to use koptic church chants, since they are probably what come closest to ancient egyptian spoken language - at least that's what my egyptologic buddy told me...

It is bad form to use the term "forum nazi" or "spell nazi" on a subject like this?
