  • what can tile defense consist of?

    ---------------------
    1:

I attacked with gunpowder units against a city with 2 longbowmen and a pikeman that together had:

    105% tile defense
    25 % unit fortify
    45 % city (unit ability)

I understand the last 2 but since gunpowder makes city wall protections obsolete I don't understand where the 105 % come from? (the enemy city is closest to my capitol and I have the strongest culture in the game so 105 can hardly be culture defense can it?)

    ---------------------
    2:

When the screenshot below is taken I have no open borders with anyone (have still never used it in a game) but the other two have open borders, I have seen their guys running back and forth across the border.

So why does the green line go through my icon? I sit up to me to keep track of whether I have open borders or not regardless of this screen?

    Any ideas? Thanks!

I am not sure if culture defense would be classified as tile but it may be so.
Actually the culture defense of the enemy city has nothing to do with your culture.
There are culture levels which add defense:
    1. 0-9 = 0%
    2. 10 - 99 = 20%
    3. 100 - 499 = 40%
    4. 500 - 4999 = 60%
    5. 5000 - 49.999 = 80%
    6. 50.000+ = 100%

So it might be possible that the city depicted above has at least 5000 culture (-> + 80% defense) and is placed on a hill (+25%) so it gets a +105% defense bonus.

Hi, I think it must be something else... memphis has currently only 3561 culture points (I could see that on the victory conditions screen) and as the screen below shows the city is not on a hill either. Also the attack angle is diagonal but the water is not in the way because there is no statement of penalty for attacking across water.

More ideas? Feel a bit left in the dark when I can't even see some logic behind the combat calculations. How can I plan a battle like that?

Also, I seem to remember having seen a screen where not only my cities were listed, but also stats for other cities, but for the love of god I can't find it again. Anyone know which screen I refer to?

Chichen Itza would give the +25%, and are you playing on Quick?

If so, that would mean she has 80% bonus, and unless I'm wrong the +25% bonus may stay regardless of Gunpowder or not (I'm not sure)

that's it! I am playing quick and she has the chichen itza... I need to properly learn what those wonders really do....

(how did you know that quick play means 80% defense? I can't see that in the manual nor civilopedia? and is this only for hatshepsut or for everyone on quick play?)

Quick gives cultural bonuses much earlier. Instead of upgrade to the next level of culture at 10, 100, 500, etc. It goes at a rate of 5, 50, 250, 2,500, and 25,000.

The green line goes indeed through your icon. It's just the line from hatshepsut to Huayna. This was fixed in the lastest patch.
