I am in the process of purchasing a laptop. It will be used for:

Work- I will need connectivity with my company's network when in the office and compatibility with software there...just standard word processing and processing photos.

Home- Connectivity with the internet through my broadband connection and use of email through my ISP, will configure to be able to download email from my company site from elsewhere.

Other- Ability to have connectivity while traveling...and a good CD burner...the ability to connect to speakers for music at home...the ability to connect to a portable printer for standard document printing... I also don't like to use laptop keyboards or pointing devices, so I'd like to either have a laptop with a standard size keyboard layout and a connection for a mouse or connections for both. I am skeptical about using wireless connections.

Personal - A system that can run Civ4 and other games. As in run Civ4 without all of the problems and slowdowns that have been so prominently discussed here and on other sites.

Power- I assume that any configuration that will run Civ4 will have more than enough juice for my business needs which are not intensive.

Cost - I do not want to spend a dime more than I need for this.

Preference- Dell, which I have used and been happy with.

If someone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

I run CIV pretty well in my old Latitude D-800 (1 GB Ram, Centrino 1.6, HD 80 GB, NVIDIA GeForce4 4200 GO (DELL Mobile), 64 MB )
So, I really believe that anything above this specs can run CIV.
But I can't be sure about the graphic card. I've seen people having big trouble with some of the ultimate devices!

If you don't care about weight or screen size then you have a lot of options, actually. You will probably need to shell out $1000 for it, though.

Something like this should probably be good for you:

Dell Inspiron 6000s are pretty good in my opinion, try this link:

Dell provides technology solutions, services & support. Buy Laptops, Touch Screen PCs, Desktops, Servers, Storage, Monitors, Gaming & Accessories

Add in what you need, I dunno if you want Bluetooth or a wireless router so add those in if you want them. I'd add in the 1 gig of Ram upgrade (+$90) and the 80 Gig HD (+$65) the free x300 Radeon video card upgrade and maybe the MS office stuff if you need that. Base price is $779 so you should be able to get a good laptop for just under $1000.

I think you can hook up any old keyboard and printer and speakers and stuff to any laptop, but I'm not sure about that, maybe someone else can confirm this?
