Trading Techs

A newbie question about trading techs: It says that prerequisite for trading techs is alphabete. Does it mean that I have to have it, or that both parts must have it before techs can be traded?
When I tried to trade techs, they were all in red (can't trade). Why is that?

From my expirience, only one party has to have Alphabet to be able to initiate tech trade. That still doesn't mean you get to trade, only that you and they get to see and offer techs. Same with Currency, only one side has to have it for trading gold to be enabled. Probably works for other tech-enabled diplomacy options too (defensive pact or what is it).

If the tech is in red, it means that you can trade techs but they don't want to trade that tech with you. Hover over the red tech to find out if it is the tech that they don't want to trade or if it is you they don't want to trade with.
