  • Farm/irrigation glitch?

In my current game I have a worker on grasslands who has the option to farm/irrigate the tile. Problem is, there is no water adjacent to this tile; no farms either for that matter, although I haven't researched the tech that allows farms to spread yet anyway. The 8 surrounding tiles are 1 city on top of plains, 4 more plains, and 3 hills--no rivers or any sort of water.

So what gives? Is this a glitch?

cities themselves act as irrigation if they themselves are next to water or an irrigated farm and NOT build on a hill.

Hauptman, thanks; I'd built a city in a previous game on a hill to try to get an irrigiation connection across a solid wall of hills [common civ 3 tactic], and it didn't work.

I think you can fix the XML section for hills to fix that.

I don't think anyone was asking for a fix

And what is your contribution to the thread other than being snarky?

I pointed out that, if a player feels that farms could be built on hills, there is an option of adjusting the default behaviour by editing the XML files.

What makes you the ultimate authority on deciding whether that is necessary or not?

The thing thats stumped me a few times is that before biology(?), when you still cant build a farm without chaining them together, that a few times Ive accidentally dissconnected the chain (especially if its really long) resulting in a farm without irrigation... for a longest time I thought it was a bug until I looked at the little red print thats says something like 'no irrigation' when you mouse-over the tile.

Do you think one could edit the XML for Windmills and allow them to pass irrigation through?

For game balance, I kind of like the idea of needing to know how to pull water up (i.e. Windmills) before being able to move water from one side of hill to the other.
