I think they should bring in the Roman and Egyption religions, Scandinavian, also. And Greek. And Finnish.

      Väinämöinen for the win.

But, for example, the Roman gods had great influence for long time, before, was it Justinianus, adopted christianity to state religion. Why were they not taken aboard?

It will partially depend on what difficulty you are playing, and whether or not you go for the religion yourself. On Prince, I find Christianity to be discovered fairly near 1AD usually. On Settler, the AI might not make it that far up the tech tree by 2050AD
On the flip side of the realism issue, I somehow managed to found Islam in 500BC in my last game (OCC, Prince) :->

Buddhists believe that there was/is no creator god, but their beliefs do not deny the existence of other god/s. Therefore, there are many different offshoots of Buddhism which incorporate various deities. Of course this means that there are at least some Atheist Buddhists, but not all are.
Buddhists does not belive in a personificated god/s. Holy men are worshipped, but not as deities. Only as very wise men who have reached enlightenment.

Depends on the sect. Mahayanas do, I believe, view the Buddha as God.

              Close enough to historic.

Any tech can be early or late in Civ IV, and that most definately includes the religion techs.
That is pretty fast. Did you use the Oracle - Theology slingshot?

Can't say it really bothers me especially as the religions are all the same. I don't really distinguish between them. I just think, great got three religions and holy cities rather than i've got x,y and z.

Perhaps if different religions offered different benefits then i'd pay more attention.

Not as God, but rather as a god. In Mahayana buddhism everyone can become Buddha. But otherwise I stand corrected
