  • Barbarian town

Restarted the same map, ahhh, 9 or 10 times now (will get it right eventually but, as someone so kindly pointed out, I'm a bit on the dumb side so takes lotsa tries)...

This last start was the first time a barbarian town showed up on my island... was also the first time the barbs had archers (I don't research that tech and hadn't contacted anyone off-island yet). (Captured the town and it included a worker. Didn't realize they had workers. )

Anyway, wondering why this time a town would show up? (I had explored the whole island) I like this town... and its worker... would like more to show up... is there something I can do to "encourage" that?
If pigs could fly we'd all have to wear helmets.

If you want to encourage barb towns then don't build many towns yourself, as they spawn in the FoW like barb units.

Villages will eventually grow into a town if no one grabs them up.

As time passes barbarian uprisinges under the fog of war will also sometimes include a settler and thus create a city.

I had seen this speculated on before, but I don't think it's true. I've seen those huts-with-warriors on late into the game.

Don't believe that either, as cool as it would be.

Barb cities likely just require a larger fog of war (3*3?) to spawn in, whereas units only need one square of it.

I've seen a barb continent but I didnt see whether it had progressed like a regular civ. That's the closest thing I've seen in cIV to the barb civs that occasionally developed with fanaticism in CIV2.

When I play the earth scenario North and south America is barbarian territory. There are about 4 towns in south america (1 big town and 3 small ones). They always have a very large number of units that come out of all those city in a pathetic attempt to destroy my new town. (I say now pathetic attempt but the first time I played the scenario I underestimated their numbers. They were like ants you can crash a lot of them but if they keep coming you are eventually eaten)

I found a sizeable island which was pretty isolated, so didn't discover it until the 1600s or so. It had 2 barbarian cities, one of size 9, another about 5. Plenty of irrigation, pastures, workboats etc, and fairly well defended with longbowmen. Was a nice ready-made city when I took it over, with granary and stuff.

Try a Terra map. When the Barbs are left unmolested for half the game, they get wicked big. And sending the necessary invasion force is remarkably difficult/expensive. (As I feel it should be, if we're simulating ol' Mutha Earth.)

Plus, they send units to defend the Goody Huts, kinda like Aztec tribute states! Sehr toll, Sirian!

In my last game I took a size 15 barb city that had expanded it's culture twice.

                      ACK!

Yeah I'm guessing a lot of these people having been playing Terra maps because they are guarranteed to have lots of powerful barbs in the new land.

Yep that's what you get on Terra for leaving the barbs alone for so long!

I love terra maps and prefer them.

Even if you blocked in at the start you have a chance to expand later on a terra map.
