If you go back ten turns you may not get a barbarian when the time comes.

Scouts aren't much good against Warriors anyway. They only have a strength of 1 as opposed to the Warrior's 2, and can't attack. The only time they stand a chance is if they're on terrain with an extra defence bonus, like Forest. On flat land they get wiped pretty much every time.

I think his point is, putting a scout in the area removes the fog of war, thus preventing barbarians from appearing.

A bad start is always a nice challenge.
Though some conditions are horrible. For instance, I will restart If I realize the size of my empire will be no more than 2 or 3 cities.
This can happen even on a normal sized pangea map with 1 + 7 civs. In particular when you start in the middle of the map playing Monarch.
In addition, beeing in the middle whitout access to the coast means there is a potential threat coming at you from all possible directions at any given time.
Dimplomacy only goes so far ... and in fact won't go anywhere if you start the game near Alexander or Caesar who seem to respond nicely to you but always is ready to backstab.
            GOWIEHOWIE! Uh...does that
            even mean anything?

I totaly agree on that one! I do the same.. I can't build a decent empire on just 2 city's from the start... But I do try to quicly build a galley to see if I can find a island near my own one... if not.. I quit.
