The Civ4 strategy guide has been written by a real Civ4 player, someone who has been in the development process, and a very strong player at that. That alone is enough to make it better than the standard guides written by some guy who plays around with the game for a week and basically recites all the numbers he can find in the guide.

This Stragegy Guide is the first one ever for any Civ version that hasn't been a complete rip-off. It's far from being the last word on Civ 4 strategy (Apolyton & CFC are always going to offer more in that regard) but its a big improvement on the usual guides that are written by people who don't know a damn thing about the game.
The previous ones were all completely terrible - giving not a gram of strategy and just rehashing the manual.

You are missing the point.
Previous guides are bascially a good accompaniment to the manual. I was expecting the same thing and was disappointed. I wasnt kidding myself that there was going to be any really good strategy.
What I was hoping for was more on the game mechanics.
What we got was something that was in between, and didnt do either job well enough, in my opinion.
I am just expressing my disatisfaction with what was produced, in the hope that Civ5 will have something akin to early guides.
But I can understand how some might get upset because their buddy wrote it. I am just passing on views that it was not worth buying this time around.

To get a Strategy guide that meets your "nitty gritty" criteria would require a book the size of a Robert Jordan novel, which no one is going to write or publish. The current strat guide gives enough of the overall strategies for you to apply them to what ever game speed, and tech choices you like.
Seems to me your real critizism is that the manual doesn't cover all the mundain details, that is not the job of a Strat Guide, but I guess you can't please everyone.
And btw if you can beat another human player with good strategy then I'm sure it'll work more than well enough against the AI in a SP games, Soren has even stated he modeled the AI responses after what us MPers would do in a similar situation, so a "play by play" of a MP game against a basically noob player was not a useless idea, IMHO, at all.
