Should saving trees for lumbermills should be rewarded more?

Consider also - in the early to mid 1800's when much of Australia (and I assume most of the western world) started clearfelling in earnet they had zero idea of the ramifications of it. No lumberjack was going to say "I'll not chop this tree down because my Great-Grandson will be able to use it more wisely"

Just assume that working a virgin forest tile is some low impact felling of trees, and working a lumber mill is managed felling of bulk trees, with time allowed to regrow.

Should I generally follow the advice of the advisor?
In a word, no. The only cases when they give optimal advice is when the solution is obvious, like mining a copper deposit.
