  • "out of video memory"

    No matter what setting I use I can not play without it crashing randomly and giving the "out of video memory" error. I have patched to the latest patch and still get the random crashes. Doom 3, Swat 4, WoW, HL2, F.E.A.R., AOE3, BF2, CoD2 and Brothers in Arms all work at maximum settings without issue. Too bad I'd rather play Civ4.

    I've tried several of the "fixes" I've seen on the forum and there has been no change at all. I wouldn't be suprized if I have made the situation worse with them.

    Why can't software ever work out of the box when it costs $50 bucks?

    I just fixed this error for my own machine. I was always getting this "out of video memory" error after a 1/2 turn or so. I tried a bunch of different things, mostly from these forums but nothing worked.

    What worked for me was to install the ATI 6.14 video drivers for my Radeon 9600. I could never get it to work by following the directions on these forums, I'd always get "cannot find .inf file" error and the old driver would not load. What I did today in desperation was to just go into the adapter properties directly (desktop->properties->settings->advanced->adapter->properties->
    driver->update driver)
    Then, I forced it to load the old 6.14 driver (that I had downloaded from ATI). Give that a try, perhaps it will work for you too!

      My laptop started giving me this error after the last patch. Game still runs fine on my desktop.

      Laptop has a FX Go5200 (yeah I know). With version 1.0 and 1.09 I was able to run the game fine on the laptop using high graphic settings. After the latest patch I now get this error before the game loads the map. I've tried new video drivers but no luck, also reduced settings and still same error.

      I suspect this is a by product of the last patch since I see a few threads about this here and at civ fanatics. Any official word on this?

        I should note that I may be able to play for 5 hours straight without an issue and I may play for 5 minutes and have it crash 3 times. There is no rhyme or reason to it, no commonality that I can see. I can kill all my background processes and it still does it. Turning off my virus protection, fire walls and spybot doesn't change anything. I even uninstalled "tea timer". Last night after I made this post I put it on a seperate machine with different (lower end) specs and didn't have the problem but the game runs at a snails pace.

        I think God is mad at me.

          **If** 1.09 worked fine and 1.52 is not working then you need to edit the Civilization4.ini file to turn off MemSaver; also turn all the graphics settings to low.
          If that's not your situation, write Firaxis.

            1.09 Randomly crashed without an error, 1.52 crashes with the 'out of video memory' error. Does this mean that I should write Firaxis? Oh, wait, they stopped responding to my inquiries when I asked for a refund

            There is no reason why Civ4 should be chewing through all my video memory anyway, and I definitely shouldn't be forced to run at the lowest graphics settings.
