  • Work Boats?

Again many thanks to all those people who have given me hints and tips about the game so far, much appreciated.

Next question is on work boats. What the smeg are they for. Ive created some workboats and the game says they can be used to create fishing/whaling vessels (and maybe others, i dont know yet). So my question is how the hell do you turn a work boat into something else, ive done the relevant research (got fishing for example), but im damned if i can see how you turn them into something else. Am i barking up the wrong tree here?

you have to move them over a water resource within your cultural boundaries - then you'll get the option.

Work boats can only affect ocean (well, water) based resources. So if you have, for example, fish or clams on a square (and it's within your cultural radius), you can send a fishing boat to that square and "improve" it. Unlike workers, the boat is consumed by improving the square, so if you have multiple squares to improve, you'll need to build more boats.

But they have no affect on 'ordinary' water squares (other than scouting, which can be useful early on).

        Create Boat
Move boat onto tile with Fish, Clams or Crab
        Use Workboat
You now have access to a resource

Ahh, now i see. I thought you could just plop them anywhere and turn them into a fishing boat (like with workers turning tiles into farms/mines etc).

          Thanks for clearing that up

Will putting a work boat over an oceran tile within your borders, but not within the radius of a city, have any effect?

The resource has to be within your cultural borders, not a city's radius in order to be improved.

I wouldn't recommend using the automated option. I had one workboat I did that to where there were two resources, one of which was already being worked. For some reason, it went to that same spot and simply disappeared.
