Myself, I usually open the Ren era via Education followed immedately by Liberalism. Under the lastest patch, I now choose Astronmeny as the free tech, not because I'm in love with the tech so much as the patch has made that tech the most expensive one around at the time I want Liberalism.

Then I beeline to Economics for the Free Great Merchant as well as the FM civic. That extra trade route is nifty.

Then I want the Printing Press.

Only then do I consider going for Democracy, it's civic choices, & the Statue of Liberty. I've very much torn between Democracy and The Coporation as to which to get first. On the one hand the civic choices & Statue of Liberty and on the other an additional trade route.
