  • Happiness and Healthiness

    Hello all,

I am confused about the effects of Happiness and Healthiness. I always try to minimize both, but I don't understand their effects. Could some help me?

    thanks in advance.

Consider them separately. Happy faces come from luxury items, religion, and cultural improvements. Unhappy faces come mostly from population, but others running Emancipation will cause unhappy faces in civs that aren't, drafting troops and pop rushing construction will also cause unhappy faces. If you get more unhappy than happy faces, then the city will have problems. For each unhappy face more than happy faces in a city, one citizen will refuse to work. This will reduce the number of squares being worked, thus reducing food intake, production and commerce.

Health is a different issue. Unhealth points come from flood plains, population, and certain buildings. Health comes from food sources, and buildings can either provide health directly or increase the health provided by certain food sources. When a city has more unhealth than health, the effect will be an increase in the amount of food consumed by the population. For each point the unhealth exceeds the health, one additional food is eaten. All this will do is slow down growth, eventually stopping it.

A city that is unhealthy eventually stagnates. It reaches a certain population level and stops there, because all the food produced is consumed by the population and unhealthiness. There is no other effect.

A city that is unhappy will continue to grow, but ceases to increase production. The unhappy citizens still consume the usual amount of food, but no new squares go into production with each level of growth, eventually causing growth to stagnate as well.
Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.
