  • thinking of buying game but i have a question first

    Hey guys and girls,

I have never played any of the Civ games but this one sparked my interest. Anyway i have been reading heaps about it to make up my mind but i kept finding info that mentioned 'turns'. What is this? How does it work?

    any help is greatly appreciated.
    thank-you

You make all your moves/decisions, then when you're done, you end your turn, and then the AI factions make theirs... Rinse and repeat till the end of the game.

that's it. turns have no time limits, so you can do all you want during yours. the other players "freeze" during your turn, so no one can attack or interfere in any way. for the same reason, you cannot counterattack someone declaring war within his turn: you have to let every player finish his turn, then you can defend yourself. being in the middle or at the end of the turn sequence has no impact on your game.
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

Pretty much. You have one big "Lag Spike" (we call this a turn) where you give orders to all your buildings (Cities) and guys (Units). But, none of your buildings or guys respond until you hit the blinking red "flush lag" (end turn) button.
Then, you get some time without lag. The time is always the same for each lag spike, so a building harvesting 5 hammers will always make 5 hammers per lag spike.
Hope this clears matters up! =D

Uhmm, units do respond immediately .

But yeah, the basic principle is as said above, and it's actually the same as for chess or many other board games. You make your turn, during which you do a whole load of stuff with no time limit, then it goes to the next player, and during his turn you can't do anything, etc.

Hmm trying to think of any other turn based games you might have played (assuming this isn't one big joke since as I first thought it was). Most war games are turn based as were the early civ games..hmm can't think of any others.

Actually, a load of people who play computer games have no clue about what a turn-based game is.

                Hello.
You have so many turns to play the game through. Since Civ III came out, it is more simultanteously, so as to make it more fluid a game. Multiplayer can be played in that fashion also, as well as single player against the computer.

Essentially, if you move anything you want, and check on things, sometimes you will be done before the computer is done. It will tell you that other Civilization are still moving. After that, the Press Return message will come up again, and Pressing or Clicking Shift-Enter will end the turn, as well as clicking on the little Red Circle on the right side of the text (below a little) to also end the turn. The game is so many turns depending on what type of game you play. There is a Quick Game, Standard Game, Epic length Game, and now the Marathon length game. Those are from a shorter to longer length of time that it will take to play the entire game. There are six ways to win the game (only one is needed) or there are usually six ways to lose the game.
The game is flexible so you can play a variety of the game with or without many options and with or within all the win conditions also. Many sized maps, and different number of opponents to play against or you can choose the opponents if playing single player against the computer.

You start in 4000B. C. and the years go by quickly in the beginning and then start slowing down as to the number of years passing by in only one turn, each turn, until usually getting to the modern age, where turns start being only one year each turn.

If the computer does not beat you first. There are multiple difficulty levels also from Very Easy to Insanely Difficult also that can be played. They are not named that, but if you enter into Tournaments like one of them here, then you will download a certain map given, and can play a single player game against the computer. Of course, no cheating, and the rules are around here somewhere, but in the end - the highest score turned in by a player -- with the turn before the end Saved and sent in -- will result in you winning the Tournament Game. Mods can also be made for the game, and other maps used -- and that can be found on the Mods page here to download.

So many things for players to do in this game -- that usually it will be played for the next 4 years. And that is not a joke either.

Don't expect to win the game off the get-go unless you are playing the easiest level of the game. It takes some time to learn the game, as to strategy, and there are many ways of using strategy to play the game and win.
