Is there some kind of a cap to how much experience a unit can gain in combat, esp against lesser units?

I have an Axeman going around wacking gleefully barbarian warriors and archers, but it stopped gaining experience after level 4 (10/17).

Page 44 has subheads "Experience Points," "Combat Experience Points," "XP Limits When Fighting Barbarians and Animals," and "Non-Combat Experience Points."

            Nudge, nudge.

5 is the most you can get from animals, and 10 is the max from barbarians. To go higher than 10 XP, you have to fight the forces of another civilization.

to Quillan for finally posting the answer to a simple question.

If you want more than 10xp, UR, you'll have to pick a real fight.

Mine is the spiral-bound, American-English edition. Thank you for making me aware there are differences.
