Often the "missing" trade link that enables a connection is a river. Coastal trade can be pretty confusing too, since I believe only one of the players needs to have a visible coastal route, so the AI can do the scouting for you.
My empire went on strike so hard every single one of my units was disbanded. Of course, the other civs then DoWed me. I decided I wasn't going to win that game.
I expand a lot more slowly now.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...
I just had my first experience with striking units. It was a duel map on Noble (practicing my first conquest) and after capturing four of my opponent's five cities, I was losing money hand-over-fist. I was going to rest a little before finishing the guy off but my units were starting to be disbanded.
So I rushed and captured the last city.
For giggles, I continued to play to see how long it was before I stopped losing troops/striking. It was about 200 years, from 750AD to 950AD--all spent building courthouses and money generating buildings. Had there been other opponents, I'd have been utterly toasted.

You should read some of the threads on Diplomacy for pretty full explanations of diplomatic relations, but you will get some in-game information on why an item isn't for trade by holding the mouse over any of the red trading options or more general information by holding it over the image of the leader.
When the negative factors affecting your relations become too high (different religion, past wars, trading with their enemy etc) then they will trade nothing to you. Even when you have a large positive total, some technologies ('We think you are too advanced' or 'We don't want to trade this just yet') or resources (why is not stated but, essentially because they would permit you to build better units) will not be traded.

joncnunn good post about the effect of religion/holy cities re: money. But I might add that I have found that #2 above is sometimes difficult to attain on the higher diff levels...esepcially if you are not Spi.
Therefore, if you can't found a rel, you are out of luck as far as that source of income goes. You would have to do something else to get coin.
