  • Slavery; Looking for info

    Hi All,

Looking for all information on the strategy of using slavery to my advantage. Any and all information would be helpful! Especially links or statistics. I like numbers

    Thanks All!

Well, you will be able to rush stuff, but your growth and happiness will suffer. I prefer using it in emergency when I really need an unit cause of a suprise attack or to get a building quickly (sometimes you might want to pop rush to prevent growth as too many people cause unhealth and unhappiness)

Vel's Strategy Thread II has some pop-rush advocacy.

I guess what I really mean, is how do I take advantage of it?

How many hammers does one pop converted to slavery produce?
At what city pop is it most advantageous?
Is it best to use slavery when is will take 3 or 2 or 1 pop?
        What are the trinks?

I’ve read in other threads that there is basically a way to exploit this (as a game dynamic, rather than a true exploit), and that timing was an issue, though they did not go into specifics.

I’m now looking for those specifics, especially in the early game land grab.

        Again, thanks for the response!

I think it is better to sacrifice the most available at once, if you are going to pop rush something.

You get a -1 to happyness whether you sacrifice 1 or 5. If you only sacrifice 1, then your net happyness does not change, and then when you need to sacrifice another, the unhappyness is greater.

I usually let my cities grow until they get unhappy, then I pop rush what I am building (or wait until it is finished, and pop rush something else). This way, unhappyness is not a problem, and I get bonus shields.

I pop rush unhealthy cities that can withstand 1 more point of unhappiness. This situation lets you pop rush every time the city grows a point. Rush a granary first and then you can do it over and over again. For everything that I've rushed I've only seen +2 unhappiness when I only rush 1 pop at a time. This keeps the cities as big as possible without loosing food or happiness.

Unhappy cities you'll have to rush 2 pop at a time or more to get it back to being happy, thats because you have to rush the 1 unhappy citizen and then 1 more for the slavery unhappiness.

When I want to rush something big like a library or granary, sometimes I'll wait until there's a sliver left on a military unit and rush a population point to have leftover hammers apply to the next build (my library). This lets me see how much chopping I'll need or if I have to plan my citizen placement to get an extra turn out of production or not. This also gives me an extra timeframe where I can rush the unhealthy cities, as it will be 10 or so turns before I can get back to a 1 population rush on the big building.

And of course, the other reasons for rushing.. like getting a military unit quickly for an incoming attack. If you rush a unit it will be available directly after you press 'end turn' so when the enemy attacks the unit will be built.

                  simple pop rush strategy:

Globe Theatre, in a massive food city, with a grainery. (and of course, slavery)

the GT mean 0 mad citizens.. so kill 'em all, they like it and a major food producing city means that (with a grainery) they'll rebuild very quickly. especially if you have at least 3 food resources within the city limits.

Also, with the no patch, Slavery is a no maintenance govt.

So, even if your not planning on sacrifing wonders, it's useful to switch to it at the same time as organized religion to help balance your city maintenance costs.

I had 4 Seafood for a city called Moscow, and I was running Hereditary Rule with a spamload of troops.
I managed to get up to -20 Slavery Unhappiness.
                      Moscow was size 10.

It's now actually cheaper than the default civic for that group, making switching to it a must, especially for for SPI civs.

Did you ever manage to get the troops out? What were you rushing, anyway?

Oh, Moscow tended to bomb itself back to size one when I went off to war - but since I got a bunch of new cities, I could care less.
It was quite a well-cultured, healthy centre of Slavery and Starvation.
                            FYI, I was pop-rushing troops.
